One of the things I like to do when getting a new car is take it on a long drive. So that’s what we did a few weekends back; we loaded our newly purchased Volkswagen Touran with kids, kit and food and headed to Lepe in Hampshire for the day.
It’s the first time we’ve had a people carrier so it took a little time for me to get used to the driving style. We’ve bought a 2.0 litre sports diesel and it has a fairly punchy engine perfectly suited for cruising on the motorway. The traffic was messy as almost all of Hampshire was trying to head down the M3 to the south coast. That suited us fine though as the boys had a sleep in the back and I got to mess around with the cruise control.
Our SatNav took us an interesting way but we found it in the end. Lepe is an amazing coastal country park located in the New Forrest. It’s got plenty of parking, a large playing field, a good outdoor play area, a cafe, an ice cream shop (and ice cream van), toilets and of course, the seaside. The beach is mostly shingle but there are patches of sand.
It was pretty busy but we got there early with our picnic prepared. The boys had loads of fun in the play area. We’re at that stage though where the kids are too old for the kiddy section in the playground but a little too young for the assault course.
The Touran is outstanding. It’s a comfy ride with plenty of room for what we need to carry. As with most new cars we treated it like it was made of glass but ultimately it’s going to take some abuse as the kids get older.
We averaged a very reasonable 50 mpg on the trip there and back. The next challenge for us is getting three car seats in the back seat. More on that soon.
Whilst at Lepe I spotted an old school Volvo in the car park. I think it was an 840 but can’t be sure. The owners bringing with them a pretty impressive set of camping equipment. There’s something alluring about old Volvos.
There seemed to be plenty of people turning up in camper vans and mobile homes too. I’ve seen more of them on the road recently.
There was the usual VW campervans but what really stood out was the classic Bedford van. It was mint and looked great.
The Touran needed the inevitable clean when we got back as the boys managed to bring most of the beach with them in their tiny shoes. Lepe is spectacular – a great day for those who fancy a seaside visit in Hampshire.
